DIY Homemade Aromatherapy Candles to Improve Sleep

Nothing beats the feeling of getting a good night’s sleep, and it’s a great way to re-energize and release tension from your body. While it is always exciting to look forward to sleep, it becomes elusive for many. Some individuals spend hours tossing and turning, which often results in poor quality sleep. One way to address this is by lighting up some candles to help you sleep. You don’t have to worry about buying these off the shelves, because you can easily DIY these aromatherapy candles.

What you’ll need:

  • Beeswax or soy
  • Essential oils
  • Cotton wicks
  • Whisk
  • Pot

What to do:

  1. Put water to your pot and allow it to boil.
  2. In a glass bowl, place your beeswax and put them on top of the boiling pot of water until it melts. Use your whisk to hasten the melting.
  3. Cut the cotton wicks. Measure them to fit the candle containers you are going to use. Tape them on any item that you can put across the container.
  4. Once the beeswax is melted, remove the bowl and remove the water from outside the glass bowl. Mix in the essential oils. Make sure to use enough drops depending on how much wax you used and the scent strength you want to achieve. A good trick would be to mix the essential oils until you can smell the scent.
  5. Pour the scented beeswax into your containers.
  6. Let it cool.

Choosing the Essential Oils to Use

The choice of essential oils would have a significant effect on how you can improve your sleep. While there are essential oils that you can use alone, you can also mix them up to achieve the best scent and combination that works for you. Aside from using them for your candles, you can use them for your homemade sprays as well. Here are some that you can try:

Lavender

If there is one oil that is tried and tested to induce sleep, it would be lavender. This oil is known for its relaxing effect. Several studies have shown the lavender is effective in increasing slow-wave sleep, which can slow heart rate and promote muscle relaxation, allowing you to experience restful sleep.

Chamomile

When you infuse your candles with chamomile oil, you can surely say goodbye to any symptoms of insomnia. On top of that, they are also great for combatting depression. In the olden days, chamomile was widely used as an herbal medicine for relieving stress and anxiety.

Bergamot

With its citrusy scent, some may think that bergamot can have stimulating effects. Studies, however, found that bergamot has a calming effect. It is responsible for causing physiological changes such as lowered blood pressure and heart rate, which can induce sleep.

Valerian

Valerian oil contains valerenic acid, which is responsible for breaking down the sleep-inducing GABA neurotransmitter. Thus, they are known to promote deep sleep.

Sweet Marjoram

The sweet smell of this oil is widely recognized for its calming effects. They are even recommended for individuals suffering from insomnia. Mixing sweet marjoram in your aromatherapy candles can help calm your senses, effectively preparing your body for a restful night.

Clary Sage

The clary sage essential oil is considered a natural sedative, which can effectively reduce the cortisol that can cause stress. Using clary sage oil can help promote sleep and prevent depression.

Sandalwood

Sandalwood has been found to have a sedative effect. Its woody smell is effective in reducing stress and anxiety levels. This oil is also effective in reducing wakefulness.
