5 Steps to Clean Your Dyson Vacuum Cleaner

The Dyson vacuum cleaner is likely to be one of the more important pieces of equipment in your home or office. After all, this vacuum cleaner makes your life easier as you don’t have to toil in cleaning the floor or carpet.

Because it plays a critical role in keeping your place clean and orderly, you’d like the Dyson vacuum cleaner to last for a long time. And the best way to achieve this is to keep it clean. How do you clean a Dyson vacuum cleaner? Continue reading to know the answer.

Five Steps in Cleaning a Dyson Vacuum

Dyson is considered a leader and innovator in the vacuum cleaner industry. It designs and distributes different types of vacuum cleaners. There are upright vacuum cleaner models. It also has cordless stick vacuum models and handheld vacuum cleaners.

While notably expensive, Dyson vacuum cleaners are worth the money because of their excellent suction power and advanced features. You can extend the lifespan of your Dyson vacuum cleaner by regularly cleaning it, or once every three to four months.

Below are the five steps in cleaning a Dyson vacuum cleaner:

Step 1: Clean the Bin

The canister or bin is where all the dirt, dust, and debris are collected. Obviously, you need to clean it. Start by disconnecting the vacuum cleaner and pushing a small red button to remove the outer shell from the cyclone.

Step 2: Clear the Cyclone

The cyclone is the part of the Dyson vacuum cleaner that is responsible for generating centrifugal force for flinging dust and dirt. With the cyclone’s power, the vacuum cleaner is able to collect dust, dirt, and debris in the bin.

Using an air compressor is the best way to clean the cyclone of a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Grab the cyclone and the air compressor then look for an area where you can clean the former.  You can also work above a large trash can so that all dirt and dust would go there.

Using the air compressor, push away all the dirt particles that have been stuck in the holes of the cyclone. If you don’t have an air compressor, you can also use a damp cloth in cleaning the cyclone. It may not be as quick and easy as the air compressor hack, but this trick should also be enough to clean that part of the vacuum cleaner.

Step 3: Clean the filters

The filters are equally important in vacuum cleaners. Dyson vacuum cleaners typically have two filters that collect dust and dirt sucked into the cleaner, preventing them from getting back into the air.

In cleaning the filter of a Dyson vacuum cleaner, you should know first the model number of your cleaning machine. You should then check the Dyson website on how to access the filter or filters of your vacuum cleaner. You will also know the recommended frequency of cleaning the filters.

Before clearing the filter, make sure that the unit is turned off and unplugged. Open it and remove the filter by following the instructions on the Dyson website. Wash the filter in cold water. Never wash it with detergent as this can damage the filter. Give it a quick rinse before letting it dry in a warm, dry place.

Some Dyson vacuum models have filters that need to be dried up to 12 hours; others should be dried up to 24 hours.  Remember not to put the filter in a microwave oven or expose it to a source of direct heat like a hairdryer or an open flame.

Step 4: Clean the Roller

Regardless of the Dyson vacuum cleaner model you have, its roller can suck in a lot of tangled hair.  This is also a common occurrence for animal lovers who turn to Dyson vacuum for pet hair removal.  You have to remove those hair strands to keep the roller in good working condition.

To clean the roller, turn the vacuum upside down. Then using a screwdriver, disconnect the soleplate and find the roller. You may use a pair of scissors to cut away strands of hair that have been caught in the roller.

While you are at it, check if the belt of the Dyson vacuum cleaner is worn out and in need of a replacement.

Step 5: Clean the vacuum and other attachments

Collect all the other removable parts of the Dyson and its attachments as well. Remove any dust or dirt in them by wiping them down with a damp microfiber cloth. You can also rinse the parts and attachments in cold water.

Don’t rush in assembling the parts of the vacuum cleaner. Set aside at least 24 hours for completely drying the parts, attachments, and filters of the vacuum cleaner.  If those parts are not fully dry, then there’s a chance that your vacuum cleaner would develop mildew.

When all its parts and attachments are dry, reassemble the vacuum cleaner. You may not use it again for several months before the mandatory maintenance clean-up.

Conclusion

In short, cleaning a Dyson vacuum cleaner is an easy job that you should have no problems doing.  Regular cleaning of a Dyson unit is important if you desire the vacuum cleaner to last a long time. As much as possible, do it at least once in 3 to 4 months.
