Does Roomba Work on Carpet?

You’ve heard a lot of good reviews on the IRobot Roomba. You may have heard that it is capable of removing dirt, dust, and debris on all floor types. But your home is carpeted. So you wonder: does the Roomba work on carpet?

This is a legitimate concern especially if you have pets at home. Hair from cats and dogs can become embedded in carpets, making it difficult to remove.  Cats may also track litter through your house which can make cleaning more cumbersome.

Does Roomba work on carpets?

The answer to this question is yes– the Roomba is noted for being capable of cleaning carpets. And you don’t need to spend a fortune on the newer models as even the dated versions are equipped with the means to remove dirt and dust from carpets.

Take, for example, the Roomba 650. Released in 2012, it is small and compact enough to go under sofas. Its large wheels, meanwhile, allow it to climb carpet edges. It is unlike other vacuum cleaners that often get stranded on the carpet edges.

The Roomba 650 also has an adjustable head function which automatically alters the position of the brushes and keeps these close to the deepest sections of a carpet.  And with its advanced sensors, it can target and effectively clean dirty sections of a carpet.

This model is one of the first to be equipped with the renowned iRobot technology, the iAdapt Navigation system. With this technology, the Roomba 650 can map out the room for a more accurate, precise, and efficient cleaning.

Check out this YouTube video of a Roomba 650 in action. As you will see, the mopping robot has no problems navigating a carpet. Its three-stage cleaning system facilitates efficient removal of dirt, pet hair, and other debris that upright vacuum cleaners may have trouble getting rid of.

The Roomba 650 can run for 60 to 90 minutes with its lithium-ion battery. However, it can also take a long time for the battery to be recharged. On average, the Roomba 650 would need two hours for recharging its battery.

Moreover, the 650 has no battery level meter or indicator so there’s always the chance that the unit would just stop working while in the middle of a cleaning cycle.

If you are willing to spend more than $500 for a high-end robot vacuum, then the Roomba 980 is something you should consider getting. Many users have called it the best robot vacuum for pet hair removal today. It’s equally effective in cleaning carpets and hard floors alike.

The Roomba is widely regarded not only as the best iRobot model for cleaning carpets but also the best in terms of all-around house cleaning. With superior suction power and an advanced cleaning system, this robot has the features to effectively clean carpets.

Like the Roomba 650, the 980 has a low-profile design. Thus, it has no problems maneuvering into the deepest parts of your house. Its large wheels facilitate seamless movement, especially in carpets. It also won’t get stuck when climbing on carpets.

Equipped with the advanced AeroForce three-stage cleaning system, the Roomba 980 effectively removes dirt and dust on carpets. Its side brush sweeps dirt followed by the action of dual-counter rotating brushes in the second stage. The vacuum then sucks in dirt, dust, and debris.

It also has highly efficient filters designed to capture up to 99% of particles like allergens and pollen. If you’re concerned about tangling and jamming of pet hair, then don’t worry as the 980 features brushless extractors designed to prevent it from happening.

Aside from the three-stage cleaning system, the Roomba 980 features the Carpet Boost mode. As you may guess correctly, this is a function specifically designed to enhance the cleaning performance of the robot vacuum on carpets and rugs.

When you activate this mode, the motor of the Roomba vacuum will increase its suction power. During Carpet Boost mode, the Roomba’s motor delivers up to 10 times more suction power. This allows it to vacuum the deepest parts of a carpet, freeing it from dust and dirt in the process.

Watch this YouTube video of a Roomba 980 in action. In the first part of the video, you’ll see how the robot vacuum was able to remove debris such as fruit loops, coffee, and pet hair without any problem.

The downside, however, is that the Carpet Boost mode can shorten the battery life of the Roomba 980.  You can expect the battery life to shorten to around 30 minutes when the 980 operates on Carpet Boost mode.

Fortunately, the Roomba 980 is smart enough to recharge itself when it detects that it is running out of battery.  Charging would take around three hours, though. But after that, the unit will automatically resume its cleaning cycle.

Like the Roomba 650, the 980 is equipped with iRobot’s iAdapt navigation system. It also uses visual localization for accurate navigation. And it has virtual walls that you can use to prevent the robot from getting into specific areas of your home.

Another downside when you activate the Carpet Boost mode of the Roomba 980— it can be noisy. This may be an issue if you live in an apartment or condo. Still, there is no denying that the Roomba 980 is the best robotic vacuum cleaner for carpets.

Conclusion

The Roomba is considered by many homeowners around the world to be the best robot vacuum cleaner today. And this belief stems from the versatility and superior performance of the Roomba. The Roomba can effectively remove dirt, dust, debris, and other particles on carpets in the same way that it can on a hard floor.  Older models like the Roomba 650 and newer iterations such as the Roomba 980 are noted for their superior cleaning performance on carpets.

While those two Roomba models have their share of shortcomings, it cannot be denied that these vacuum cleaners are very much capable of cleaning carpets any time of the day.
