We’re huge fans of DIY projects here at Red Ted Art, and the Christmas season is the perfect time to get creative with personalized and homemade gifts. When it comes to kids’ advent calendars, we’ve all been there – receiving a simple chocolate calendar from a well-meaning relative. To mix things up, I love coming up with unique ideas that my kids will actually enjoy.

As they’ve grown older and busier with school, our activity-based calendars have become less feasible (remember the days of crafts one day, baking the next, and storytelling the third? It was perfect for DIY Advent Calendars). So when Photobox challenged me to create a photo-based DIY project, I knew exactly what I wanted to do – especially after discovering their stunning retro prints. That’s how our Photo Advent calendar came to life.

As many parents can attest, buying a Lego Advent Calendar can be a thrilling experience for kids – at least, initially. My own boys had a blast opening theirs every year until they eventually outgrew the appeal of the small Lego figures and sets. As I watched their enthusiasm wane, I found myself wishing there were more options available or that I could simply fill the calendar with personalized gifts tailored to their interests.

That’s when a lightbulb moment struck – why not repurpose the inside of the original Lego calendar to create a DIY Reusable Advent Calendar? The result was a unique and thoughtful way to keep the holiday spirit alive, even as my children grew older.

Imagine strolling through the Christmas ornament aisle at your local craft store, where an impressive array of chalkboard ornaments catches your eye. The idea struck me to create a Christmas Countdown Ornament, building upon the success of my previous project, the Christmas Countdown Sandwich Board. I opted for a ‘squished’ round ornament instead of a perfectly spherical one, as this would provide ample space for writing and make it easier to read.

My chosen ornament was already painted black with chalkboard paint, but you can easily achieve the same result by painting a clear ornament or any other surface that’s suitable for writing. The true magic lies in allowing children to contribute by updating the number each day, making this project an enjoyable and interactive experience.
